Lesson 5: Math You Forgot (or Never Learned)

AI for the Non-Technical Homeschool Parent · Module 2, Lesson 5.

Objective

This lesson helps you teach upper-level math with confidence. By the end, you’ll know how to have AI walk you through problems step by step and explain exactly where your child’s work went wrong.

Opening Story

Kim’s son was stuck on two-step equations. Every night ended the same way: he got frustrated, she looked at the answer key, saw his answer was wrong, and couldn’t explain why. One evening she typed his worked problem into her AI assistant and asked it to find the mistake. It showed her that he’d been dividing before subtracting. For the first time in weeks, she knew exactly what to say the next morning.

The Reframe

Most math frustration isn’t about a whole subject. It’s about one step a child keeps getting wrong. You don’t need to relearn algebra. You need to find that one step.

How This Works

There are three ways AI helps with math. First, use the Night-Before Method to learn the concept yourself. Math explanations work best when you ask the AI to go one step at a time:

“Teach me how to solve [type of problem] one step at a time. After each step, explain why we do it. Then give me a practice problem.”

Second, use it to check your child’s work. Type in the problem and their answer, including the steps they wrote:

“My [age]-year-old solved this problem: [problem]. Here is their work: [steps]. Don’t just give the right answer. Explain which step went wrong and why, in words I can explain to them.”

Third, use it to make practice. Ask for more problems at the same level, then a few slightly harder ones:

“Give me 5 practice problems like this one, starting easy and getting slightly harder. Put the answers at the end so I can check them.”

One caution: AI is usually good at explaining math, but it can make arithmetic mistakes. For important answers, check with a calculator or the answer key. Lesson 9 covers this in detail.

This Week’s Assignment

Take one math problem your child got wrong recently. Ask the AI to explain which step went wrong. Then use that explanation to talk it through with your child. Note in your Prompt Notebook whether the explanation helped.

Looking Ahead

Next, we leave the worksheet behind and head into the kitchen for science.
