Lesson 1: You Don’t Have to Know It to Teach It

AI for the Non-Technical Homeschool Parent · Module 1, Lesson 1.

Objective

This lesson changes how you see your role. By the end, you’ll understand why being your child’s guide matters more than being their encyclopedia, and why learning alongside them is a strength.

Opening Story

Jenna had homeschooled her three kids for six years. Reading, history, and nature study felt natural. Then her oldest turned thirteen and the algebra book arrived. She opened it, read the first page twice, and quietly closed it. That night she searched for local tutors, priced out online classes, and wondered whether it was time to put her daughter back in school. The problem wasn’t her daughter. It was the voice in Jenna’s head saying, “You were never good at math. Who are you to teach this?”

The Reframe

Jenna believed a teacher must know everything before she teaches it. But no teacher knows everything. Classroom teachers rely on textbooks, answer keys, colleagues, and lesson guides. You’re allowed the same support.

Your job isn’t to have every answer. Your job is to know your child, set the direction, and keep learning in front of them. When your child watches you learn something hard, they learn something no textbook can teach: that hard things can be learned at any age.

How This Works

Think of yourself as a guide on a trail you haven’t hiked before. A good guide doesn’t need to have walked every mile. She reads the map, watches the weather, checks on the hikers, and decides when to push on and when to rest. AI can be your map. It can explain a concept five different ways, answer the same question for the tenth time without sighing, and quiz you until it sticks.

What AI can’t do is know your child. It doesn’t know that your son needs to move while he thinks, or that your daughter shuts down when she feels rushed. That knowledge is yours, and it’s the most valuable thing in your homeschool.

When Jenna understood this, she stopped asking, “Am I qualified to teach algebra?” She started asking, “How can I learn this one lesson well enough to guide her through it?” That question has an answer, and the rest of this course shows you how.

This Week’s Assignment

Take out the subject you wrote down in the Introduction. In your Prompt Notebook, finish this sentence: “I don’t have to be an expert in this subject. My job is to…” Write two or three lines. Keep it where you’ll see it.

Looking Ahead

Next, you’ll open an AI assistant and have your first real conversation with it. It takes about fifteen minutes.
