Lesson 3: The Night-Before Method

AI for the Non-Technical Homeschool Parent · Module 1, Lesson 3.

Objective

This lesson gives you the method the rest of the course is built on. By the end, you’ll be able to learn a topic you don’t know in about fifteen minutes the night before you teach it.

Opening Story

It was 9 p.m. on a Sunday. Tara’s lesson plan for Monday said “converting fractions to decimals,” and she had no memory of how to do it. She thought about skipping it, then about searching videos for an hour. Instead she opened her AI assistant and typed one sentence. Twelve minutes later, she understood it well enough to quiz herself, and she went to bed knowing exactly how she’d start the lesson in the morning.

The Reframe

You don’t need to master a whole subject. You need to understand one lesson well enough to guide your child through it tomorrow. That’s a much smaller job, and it’s one you can do tonight.

How This Works

The Night-Before Method has three steps: learn it, test yourself, and plan it. It starts with one fill-in-the-blank prompt. Copy it into your Prompt Notebook:

“I’m homeschooling my [age]-year-old. Teach me [topic] simply, give me one real-life example, then quiz me with 3 questions.”

The AI explains the idea in plain words, connects it to everyday life, and then checks whether you really understood it. Answer the quiz honestly. If you get one wrong, that’s the point. Ask it to explain again.

When an explanation doesn’t click, use one of these follow-ups:

“Explain it a different way, like you’re talking to someone who was never good at math.”

“What mistakes do kids usually make with this?”

“Give me a hands-on activity I could use to teach this.”

The second follow-up is especially useful. When you know the usual mistakes, you can spot them in your child’s work before they become habits.

Here’s how it went for Tara. The AI told her a fraction is just a division problem, so 3/4 means 3 divided by 4, which is 0.75. It reminded her that a quarter is 1/4 of a dollar, which is why it’s written $0.25. Then it quizzed her. She got the first two right, got stuck on 3/8, and asked for help. It walked her through it using money, and it clicked.

This Week’s Assignment

Choose one real topic you’ll teach this week. The night before, use the Night-Before prompt, take the quiz, and ask at least one follow-up question. Write the prompt and the topic in your Prompt Notebook.

Looking Ahead

You’ve learned the topic. In Lesson 4, you’ll turn what you learned into a lesson your child will actually enjoy.
